Obligation, Duty & Morality

Obligation

Obligations are amazing for players, they provide a title and narrative description for the character which they are to play in Star Wars. They are able to come up with whatever they want from the Character’s Background and give him/her additional depth that can be used as a mechanic for the Edge of the Empire system.

Starting Obligations are done in a specific way that allows a character to determine what he/she is out in the Galaxy for, and how deep he/she is in for. However, this does not deeply hurt you, because a character can reduce his Obligation score in order to help him with reduce the fire cooking him or her. This allows a specific character to be highlighted in order to have an adventure start to pay back a debt, provide a favor, or cut a break for a character who is undergoing the stress of the Obligation.

You can increase your obligation, by increasing your experience, or starting credits, as follows:

  • +5 Obligation → 500 Credits or +5 Experience
  • +10 Obligation → 1,000 Credits or +10 Experience
TOTAL OBLIGATION:

Duty

As a part of the Rebellion or another organization, each Player Character has a commitment to a specific kind of Duty. This is his main focus, not just on a single mission, but in everything he/she does for the Alliance or similar organization. It might be one of the driving factors for why he/she joined, or it could be the area of focus for which he/she has a particular talent. Whatever the reason for adopting this expression of Duty, it has become how he/she is judged in terms of his successful contributions to the effort to overthrow the Empire.

You can reduce your duty, by increasing your experience, or starting credits, as follows:
  • +5 XP or +1,000c → -5 Duty
  • +10 XP or +2,500c → -10 Duty

TOTAL DUTY: 0

Morality

Morality is, simply put, the measure of right and wrong. Though the Star Wars universe has shades of moral relativism, it is primarily a universe of good and evil. Morality measures how good or evil characters are. It is a measure of their actions, thoughts and attitudes, and how they have helped, harmed, or hindered those around them. Often, this can be shaped by the character’s personality, and therefore the character’s emotional strengths and weaknesses which can greatly attribute themselves to their use of the Force.

During Character creation, players can customize their characters by also influencing their Morality. This system is not meant to be an argument-spawner of whether an action was right or wrong, but rather, to measure a character by his or her actions. Light side moralities are above 70, while dark side moralities are below 30. In between those values, are more neutral. The range goes from 1-100.

TOTAL MORALITY: 0
